The European Commission has set up a web page on the Language Industry

Apr 14, 2011

The Directorate for Translation of the European Commission has set up a web page to gather and share data on the Language Industry in the European Union.

In 2009, the Directorate for Translation published a report on the size of the sector. One of the conclusions drawn from the report was the difficulty in gathering data on this sector. A further conclusion was that, despite being a sector that has displayed strength and a capacity for growth (10% per year) in the face of the crisis, its true size is not perceived. To address this, it was felt that a need existed to create a common database with qualitative and quantitative data.

The aim is to collect data on the Language Industry in the European Union.

So an appeal was made to the companies, associations and individuals that work in the ambit of the Language Industry, as well as to the Official Statistics Offices to contribute their data to this interactive tool, which encompasses the following sub-sectors of the Language Industry:

  • Translation
  • Interpretation
  • Subtitling and dubbing
  • Software localization and web page globalization
  • Development of language technology tools
  • Organisation of multilingual conferences
  • Language teaching
  • Language advisory services
